Animated Rain using Toon Boom Animate (and Photoshop).

Free Tutorial - Tonyteach.comAnimated rain is one of my favorite effects to create. This simple tutorial involves creating the rain drops in Photoshop, exporting them as png’s, then importing and animating them in Toon Boom Animate.

There are several ways to create animated rain, and I’ve used a lot over the years, but this is the first time I decided to mix several techniques into one effect. One of my favorite ways to animate rain is to create a single image in Photoshop covered with rain drops, then take that image, and flip it in several directions over several frames, so it appears as more than a single image. This gives the illusion that each rain drop is in a different place for each frame. The second animated rain trick I learned from Adam Phillips, and this was to make a single image of rain drops, but this time, make it at least as twice as tall as your final animation.

You would then animate the image vertically, so the rain is coming straight down. This animation combines those 2 effects to create a layered effect of animated rain. This also hides most of the visible patterns of cycles. In this tutorial, we’ll go over creating the rain in Photoshop*. This includes using filters, selection techniques, and saving for web. Then we’ll show how to animate the rain in Toon Boom Animate, including importing images, working with layers, and creating cycles. I chose not to add sound to this tutorial, because the tutorial was running a bit long.

Here is a link to one of the first rain tutorials I did in Animate, A Rainy Cityscape.
We will be doing more rain tutorials later, though.

* If you are following along in Photoshop, this technique works in versions CS2 & above.
