Michael Doret is probably one of the top 5 reasons I got into the art business. I have admired his work since I was a kid, and earlier in 2011 I was blessed with getting to interview him. This post/interview, for personal reasons I wont go into, was delayed multiple times, and I am now FINALLY sharing it with everyone. Please enjoy

When I was in 2nd grade, and you were still allowed to have REAL parties in the classroom, the most popular albums you could bring in were those by the rock band KISS. This was the age where album cover art was king, and one of my favorite covers of all time (and I still own the actual album) was KISS Rock and Roll Over. As a kid, I even did my best at drawing Gene Simmons’ face from the cover using purple construction paper and crayons. The signature on the cover art, simply said – Doret.

Decades later, I had graduated art school and was teaching college, and I came across a piece of sample art work from Adobe Illustrator. It was a piece of album cover art for the Squirrel Nut Zippers. What stood out to me, besides its brilliant simplicity, was the signature of the artist… Doret.

I later went online to look up the artist, only to find out he was the same Doret who had created my favorite KISS
album from decades before! Michael Doret!

How to Learn Flash

How to Learn Flash, now available on Amazon, is a series of Flash tutorials for beginners that walks you through the basic production pipeline of creating Flash projects without making you pull your hair out. We are realeasing these on Amazon Kindle. In this first exercise, Simple Interactive Pencil, you will create a basic project: a pencil that when clicked, draws a straight line.

This first project in the series, though very simple in appearance, shows the basic elements that are needed to build interactive projects in Flash: drawing, creating and naming layers, creating symbols, button states, importing images & sound, motion & shape tweens, animation, and Actionscript (Flash’s computer language).

I have had over 10 years of experience in teaching and using Flash, and I wanted to create a series of tutorials for all of those who were curious about learning flash, but weren’t quite sure what was involved. This series of lessons has been adapted from classes I have taught to beginners who were just learning flash.

We at tonyteach believe that learning flash, or anything for that matter, shouldn’t be difficult or expensive, and our goal is to pack as many tips, tricks, and techniques into a single, simple, cost-effective project.

Here are the first 3 videos in our series of Photoshop matte painting tutorials. These were created as entries into a contest by Tubetape, and each tutorial is no longer than 5 minutes, and is on a basic to intermediate level.

Per Wikipedia, Matte paintings are artist-created representations of landscapes, architecture or scenery that are combined with live-action footage in movies and film to create or enhance an environment that doesn’t exist, or would be too dangerous or expensive to film in reality.

Simple matte painting tutorials

I had looked online for other matte painting tutorials, and found a lot of the shorter videos were time lapsed – Nothing against time-lapse tutorials, but I wanted to create a few basic tutorials of my own. These tutorials edit and composite video using only Photoshop® CS4. As we use nothing but photoshop for adding matte paintings to these videos, it is suggested that you shoot your footage with a tripod, and do not move the camera. If you are doing moving, longer, or more complex shots, I suggest using After Effects in addition to Photoshop.
